Report on the anti-NATO protests in Madrid, June 2022

Report on the anti-NATO protests in Madrid
by Joe Lombardo
28 June 2022

During the days before the June 28 – 30 NATO Summit in Madrid, thousands rallied in the streets and meeting halls of the city in opposition to the NATO summit.  Protesters include people from the United States including Ann Wright, Paki Weiland of Code Pink and others, as well as myself and other members of UNAC.  People also came from many other countries around the world. Two meetings were held in Madrid to counter the NATO summit, one called the Peace Summit and the other the Counter Summit.  Both recognized the aggressive character of the US led NATO alliance.  The Peace Summit’s final resolution can be found here, and rough translation of the Counter Summit’s final resolution can be found here.

UNAC people attended both conferences and I spoke at the Counter Summit, which had the perspective of organizing an anti-imperialist movement and was organized mostly by Spanish, anti-imperialist organizations.  My talk can be found here.  [see below] UNAC also distributed a statement on NATO and Ukraine at the two meetings in both Spanish and English that can be found here and a flyer from the Sanctions Kill coalition with a bar code to a very important report on sanctions authored by members of the coalition. Spanish and English version of the flyer were distributed and the English version can be found here.

Following the alternative summits, thousands marched together in a common demonstration to protest the NATO summit. The demonstration was major news in Madrid and was in all the news stations and newspapers.  One paper dedicated its entire front page to the demonstration.

The NATO summit is happening at the same time that the US/NATO proxy war against Russia is waging in Ukraine.  Therefore, it is important that the peace movement has shown a strong opposition to NATO at this time.  NATO is set to revise its orientation and to become more of a world-wide tool for US imperialism.  It is proposing a new alignment that will see it spread its aggression to Asia and around the world.  According to information that can be found on the NATO web site, they will project Russia and China as their main enemies.  This means that we will see further aggression against major military and nuclear powers that will put the entire world at risk.

Only a few months after the US/NATO defeat in Afghanistan, they choose to conduct another war, this time with Russia, a major nuclear power. They hoped to fill the coffers of the military industrial complex by providing weapons to fight a major war in Europe.  The US also hoped to break the strong trade relationship between Europe and Russia and Europe and China to allow US companies to fill the gap.  They also hoped that the strong sanctions applied against Russia would cause the Russian economy to collapse, causing a crisis in the country that might lead to collapse of the governement, and allow for a more US/NATO compliant government in Russia. Possibly this would foreshadow a breakup of Russia and allow the US and its NATO allies to more easily dominate it.  With a defeated Russia they hoped to be able to further surround China – which is challenging US hegemony around the world – and be in a better position to eventually defeat China, economically and militarily.

But their plan is failing as Russia is winning the war in Ukraine. Instead of having its economy fail, it is the Western economies that are in trouble with both recession and inflation, while the ruble is rising against the dollar, the Russian economy is growing, and the Russian people are showing strong support for their country’s fight against the US/NATO proxy war in Ukraine.

But despite this reality, the NATO summit is set to double down and move forward with its aggression towards Russia and China.  This will affect every person on the planet in a negative way and so we must continue to build our movement to bring about a world of peace not war and to oppose the US/NATO aggression around the world.

No to NATO expansion!
No to NATO!
No weapons to Ukraine!
No to war!
Hands off China!

Note:  After the protests, members of UNAC attended a meeting of the No to NATO group where plans were started for future work including webinars, more focus on the climate crisis and a commitment to organize for the next NATO summit, which appears to be planned for 2023 in Lithuania.

Joe Lombardo’s talk to the NATO counter-summit in Madrid 2022

The United States is the main imperialist power in the world.  NATO is its partner in crime.  The US has its military in around 170 countries. It has about 20 times the number of foreign military bases as all other countries combined, and it has a military budget close to that of the rest of the world combined. The United States dominates the world, politically, economically, and militarily.  Any country that does not go along with its demands becomes a target of its propaganda, its military, its sanctions and its many regime-change organizations like the National Endowment for Democracy, USAID and others.  It has created numerous coups, military actions, and wars to further its goals.

Donbass: July 2016 is like the worst days of the summer of 2014; Kiev blitzkrieg expected

“Russia was excluded from the negotiation talks for the Donbass, but continues to be held responsible for the implementation of the Minsk agreements.”

Silvia Vittoria MISSOTTI
In Opinione Pubblica, July 14, 2016
Translated from Italian by Tom Winter July 17, 2016

This July the military activity of the Ukrainian forces reached a peak. The attacks on the territory of Donbass have risen to hundreds every day. Hardly a day goes by without  the civilian residents of the Peoples Republic of Donetsk and Lugansk (DNR and LNR) falling under Ukrainian attacks, and the housing and infrastructure in the cities getting turned into more ruins.

Every day, the representatives of the Republics of Donbass record heavy artillery being brought up to the border from Ukraine, which is forbidden by the Minsk Accords.

At the NATO summit in Warsaw violations of the ceasefire by both sides were noted, but NATO had to admit the Ukrainian responsibility.
On July 6, Grigory Karasin, deputy Russian Foreign Minister, met with the ambassadors of France and Germany in Russia, and expressed concern about the situation in the Donbass because of Ukraine’s dangerous actions.
In a statement that Karasin issued after the meeting, it was openly stated that the authorities in Kiev are preparing to resume war in the Donbass. On the same day, at the initiative of President Putin, there was a telephone conversation between the Russian leader and President Obama.
A major theme of the interview was precisely the situation in the Donbass.
US refuses, however, to put pressure on Kiev and force the Ukrainian government to submit to the Minsk agreements. At the NATO summit, Russia was accused of aggression against Ukraine in the Crimea and in the Donbass, and the government in Kiev has been promised US military aid to the value of 500 million dollars.
In addition, a G5 + Ukraine commission was established to replace the “Normandy format” process for resolving the conflict in Donbass. Russia was excluded from the negotiation talks for the Donbass, but continues to be held responsible for the implementation of the Minsk agreements.
Russia thus would face further isolation, as well as NATO’s political and military pressure, the while that the Republics of Donbass are faced by new bombings.
According to representatives of the DNI, the the situation in this summer of 2016 in the Donbass is reminiscent of the darkest weeks of the summer of 2014. The Ukrainian artillery at this time is bombing the area’s cities, including Donetsk, a city of one million people.
Ukraine has concentrated almost all the available units of its military equipment at the demarcation line with the Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk in addition to the troops, even “Grad” rocket launchers, which were originally near Chernobyl. It is a radioactive mechanism, and therefore dangerous to health of the crew.
According to representatives of the DNR, all this would be done in order to implement a “blitzkrieg:” the defeat of the Donbass Republics in a quick battle.
At the time, the population of Donetsk is about three-fourths of what it was before the war, and the bombings continue. Kiev would seem to be conducting a scorched earth policy in the Donbass, the zone standing apart from the government, in order to undermine the morale of the local citizens.
Therefore, Russia would be forced to protect the people of Donbass by any means, including military means. But so far diplomatic means are still going on. On 13 July, President Putin held telephone talks with Angela Merkel and François Hollande, and once again expressed deep concern about Ukraine’s heavy bombing on the Donbass.

German Economic News: Merkel declares Russia is the rival of Germany

The new military doctrine sees Russia not as a partner, but as a rival. Moscow is outraged and accused Chancellor Merkel to be the US government hearing. The doctrine, which is set forth in the new White Paper is likely to make a battlefield, especially the Internet in Germany.

The relationship between Germany and Russia pushes further towards disintegration. The reason for the latest upset is the forthcoming White Paper of the Bundeswehr, so the new military doctrine of Germany. The Russian secret services have apparently already thoroughly studied the paper – and sent before the publication a harsh note of protest to Berlin: The head of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Russian State Duma, Alexei Puschkow, writes via the messaging service Twitter: “The decision of the German government, declaring Russia as an opponent, shows Merkel’s subservience to the Obama administration. ”

Germany estimates Russia as a rival, not as partners

Earlier, the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov had criticized Germany that in its edited White Paper has classified Russia as a rival and not a partner, reports Tass. “Russia is no longer a partner, notes the government, but rather a rival. Through its readiness/willingness that has emerged in Crimea and eastern Ukraine to forcibly enforce its own interests and to unilaterally move borders guaranteed by international law, Russia put the created post-Cold War European order of peace open to question, “the newspaper Zeitung Welt quoted from the White Paper of Federal Ministry of Defence.

Peskov said, according to TASS that the representation of der Welt should really be true, this is at the same time “unfortunate and objectionable”: It is unfortunate that you in the West have not therefore understood Russia’s intentions, namely “on the European continent an atmosphere of at the future-oriented cooperation instead of confrontation “to strive for. The concern is well founded in the possibility that Germany could be triggered by false information into “confrontational actions” which “do not contribute to confidence and cooperation”.

The White Paper is a document of the Ministry of Defense, where the security situation and rivals of Germany are defined. In the document, both the allies and the opponents and enemies of Germany are defined.

Publication of the document is not carried out until July

The White Paper follows in its definition of Russia as a rival from the new NATO doctrine. This had been decided at the NATO summit in Wales, afterwards Chancellor Merkel had given the realignment for Germany in the order.

Currently there is no version of the White Paper to be published in July. The newspaper der Welt had apparently been leaked some excerpts. However, there are well-known threat pictures of terror, climate change and disorderly immigration, on the newspaper argues. Interestingly, evidently the disintegration of the EU is not specifically seen as a threat to Germany, but is described only as a possible scenario ..

Already, one can read on the website of the Ministry of Defense that the government wants to move, especially the internet as a place of formation of opinion at bay. The Federal Government considers – in almost paranoid fear – behind every Smiley a Aluhut, thus senses a disinformation campaign comprehensively controlled by the Kremlin. This front is expected soon more strongly to become the focus of military defense. We read on the official website:

“So-called Internet trolls and politically controlled media campaigns the Kremlin attempts to influence the media, politics and public opinion in Western societies. Even Germany was affected in the past. Experts expect the targeted misreporting of a “hybrid warfare” to.

Troll posts to control Internet communications and are found mainly in discussion forums. As Troll is in this context referred to, who systematically influenced discussions with strategically-sided contributions from one covert senders to achieve a politically distorting effect.

An example are contributions that should justify Russia’s aggression in Ukraine. These posts come informative and in attractive packaging, therefore, but are part of a sophisticated strategy: By strategically placed false news, the opinion of the reader is to be strongly influenced.

Working in St. Petersburg alone, according to DGAP-expert Stefan Meister are 300 Kremlin trolls on the dissemination of false or fictitious information on the social networks. One of the most important tools is the online media portal “Sputnik”, which is available in more than 30 languages. Several hundred employees work there to the global spread of propaganda messages of the Kremlin. It is responsible for the portal of the Russian state news agency Rossiya Segodnya. The NATO Strategic Communications Center of Excellence (COE StratCom) in Latvia’s capital Riga distinguishes between five different digital attacks:

– Conspiracy Trolls that are aimed at tracing all the evil in the world to the United States.

– Rage Trolls incite hatred and aggression.

– Annex trolls spread malicious programs.

– Wikipedia Trolls have the goal of manipulating evidence on the net.

– Bikini trolls put on erotic pictures to – to scatter propaganda – such as captions.
