Heavy fighting Reported Around Donetsk
Translated from Russian by J.Hawk
Statement by DPR Minister of Defense Basurin
“As of right now [7:30 a.m.], we have about 15 killed, those are the DPR losses since the first assault at 3:45am. UAF shelling damaged the Skochinskoye mine in Donetsk, depriving it of electricity and stranding 375 miners below ground without air or water. Abakumov mine was hit as well, but no miners were under ground. Right now there is a battle being waged at Maryinka.
Statements from military correspondents: “Donetsk, Makeyevka, Gorlovka, Dokuchayevsk, and Shirokino are under fire, Ukrainians are jamming cell phone communications. We need people to show up at blood transfusion centers, the militia has many wounded. Witnesses claim shells struck the Sokol market in the Tekstil region of Donetsk while there were many civilians there. The number of casualties is still being ascertained. Hell is unfolding in Maryinka. We are launching Grads and everything else we’ve got at the Ukrainian positions. UAF ATO HQ is claiming that Maryinka is under attack by 20 tanks and 1000 DPR militia.
Statement by militiaman Aleksandr Zhuchkovskiy
“The NAF is so far not conducting a full-scale assault. The enemy attempted a breakthrough, but we counter-attacked and advanced, the UAF took heavy losses. Fighting spiked starting at 5 am when the UAF opened heavy fire on our positions using Vasilyok automatic mortars. Then their 120mm mortars, tanks, 122mm howitzers, Grads, and some unidentified very large caliber weapons, most likely imported. We had no choice but to reply with counterbattery fire and begin forward movement. We put down many enemies, they evacuated two trucks worth of KIAs from their positions. We repelled the attack from the direction of Krasnogorovka and entered Maryinka. We raised the DPR flag, but things are not going as well as they seem. We don’t fully control it, we are stuck in a positional fight. UAF is sending a 50 vehicle strong column of reinforcements. The situation in Maryinka and Krasnogorovka is reminding one of situation in Avdeyevka and Peski during the winter. We can hold back the enemy, but if there are no orders to advance further, we’ll continue butting heads and lose people without gaining much.
Announcement by a Operational Coordination Center
“Donetsk. Petrovka is under UkroNazi shelling. Our groups found over 30 Nazi dead during the fighting around Maryinka and Krasnogorovka. The Ukrofascists are delivering wounded to Dimitrovk, Konstantinovka, Artyomovsk, but it’s not an organized evacuation. NAF has found a large number of UAF wounded on positions it captured. There are over 200 wounded in the over-filled Kurakhovo hospital, including many in critical condition.”
Military correspondents report:
“Should there be a breakthrough, UAF positions in Peski, Karlovka, and Avdeevka will be encircled. The Right Sector is talking about the possibility of an encirclement around Peski and Avdeyevka if the front is broken at Maryinka. This was reported by the Right Sector deputy corps commander Valentin Manko.”

The armed forces of Ukraine contacted officers of Donetsk People’s Republic through open channels of communication with the request to open fire on the “Azov” battalion. This was announced by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Defence of DPR, Eduard Basurin.
“UAF is trying to provoke our soldiers to violate the ceasefire: military personnel of UAF contacted officers of DPR militia through open channels of communication with a request to open mortar or artillery fire on the positions of “Azov” regiment, complaining about their insubordination and aggression towards the civilian population,” – said Basurin.
This was reported by RIA Novosti with reference to Donetsk News Agency.
He added that these calls to open fire were ignored by the militia. “We advise the armed forces of Ukraine to restore order in subordinate units with their own forces and means” – said Basurin.

Fighting occurred between regular units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces yesterday in Avdeyevka, in the Donetsk oblast. This was reported by the Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR) Ministry of Defense Corps, Deputy Commander Edward Basurin.
“We have documented evidence of an exacerbation of confrontation not only between the regular army and the Ukrainian Volunteer Battalions, but also skirmishes between units of the UAF,” explained Basurin.
The Deputy Commander said this before reports that the 93rd mechanized brigade of the UAF required the rogue volunteer battalion ‘OUN’ (Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists) to leave their positions near Peski.
“And today, April 11, in Avdeyevka there has been fighting between regular units,” said Basurin.
“Please note that these facts of Ukrainian units firing at each other, are presented to the Ukrainian authorities as a violation of the ceasefire by the DNR militia, as regularly reported in the OSCE and Ukraine controlled media,” – said the representative of the military department DNR .
Recall that on April 1st, the DNR Defense Ministry reported that the Ukrainian battalion “Donbass” opened fire on positions of the “Right Sector.” According to representatives of the militia units who do not want to obey the command of the UAF, “We reserve the right not to respect the ceasefire.”
The leadership of the armed forces of Ukraine had decided, at the end of the day, to take the Volunteer Battalion ‘OUN’ from the line of contact (ceasefire line) in Peski.
“By staying on the front line, the Volunteer Battalion of the OUN, which is not officially part of the armed forces, did not allow Ukraine to fully implement the Minsk agreement”- said in a statement posted on the UAF website.
The ceasefire officially came into effect in Donbass on February 14, 2015 at 01:00 in Donetsk. The DNR has repeatedly stated that compliance with the truce depends entirely on the Ukrainian side.

Kiev convinced the Right Sector to become part of the UAF
Translated from Russian by J.Hawk
Rada Deputy and Ukrainian nationalist leader Dmitriy Yarosh announced that a procedure for incorporating the Right Sector into the UAF as an subordinate organization had been agreed upon. The two sides agreed at a closed meeting between Ukrainian MOD representatives and Yarosh in Dnepropetrovsk to adopt as a model the cooperation between the Tallinn government and the Estonia Defense Union, which began in the early 1990s.
“We agreed to introduce a bill that would establish the Right Sector as the basis for an organization similar to the Estonia Defense Union. We will have reserve units, combat units. This will be a compromise system, the golden middle which will satisfy both us and the government institutions,” Yarosh told Ukrainian journalists.
The Estonia Defense Union is a volunteer paramilitary formation which is part of the national army and which is financed by the state, but which at the same time retains certain autonomy. The EDU participates in national and international military exercises, and also prepares personnel for militias that patrol assigned territory.
Moreover, EDU units have their own command. Obviously it’s that aspect of the organization that persuaded the Ukrainian radicals to cooperate with the GenStaff, after all the Right Sector HQ said many times they would not accept a leader other than Yarosh. Therefore the nationalists will become an official part of the armed forces, while retaining certain autonomy.
We remind our readers that the Ukrainian MOD held negotiations over several months with the Right Sector activists, offering them various options for incorporation into GenStaff structure. The nationalists rejected all Kiev proposals, including full legalization of the movement in return for joining the military as contract servicemen.
There are fully justified concerns among Ukrainian politicians and experts that should the conflict in the Donbass fade away, yesterday’s volunteer fighters will create illegal armed formations aimed at, among others, the Kiev government.
Oleg Medvedev, an advisor to the president of Ukraine, admitted that the Kiev authorities had lost control over the National Guard. On his Facebook page, he blamed the volunteer battalions in creating disorders in Kharkov, where the Ukrainian activists picketed the state council in December, trying to force Mayor Gennadiy Kernes to resign. Medvedev proposed that they either return to the front, or find civilian work, and stop creating pickets and disorders in cities where they do not reside.
J.Hawk’s Comment: This is actually a sign of weakness on part of Poroshenko, not quite the “night of long knives”, but rather an “evening of short letter openers”. It’s one of several instances in recent days where Poroshenko, when trying to confront the right-wing nationalists, blinked first. One would think that he would follow up the success against Kolomoysky by mopping up the right-wing paramilitaries which represent the biggest threat to his own power at the moment. But instead he made them even more of a danger, both to himself and to the country as a whole.
Conversely, the granting of autonomous status to the Right Sector makes Yarosh more powerful, and it’s not even clear whether Poroshenko was able to peel Yarosh away from Kolomoysky, who may well continue to fund the Right Sector, now a perfectly legal organization and moreover one with specific security responsibilities, thanks to its autonomous status. So now the Ukrainian neo-Nazis have a perfectly legal cover for conducting paramilitary training, something they could not have dreamed of before the Maidan. Ukraine is still firmly on course for its Doomsday. Not that Ukraine is alone in doing this. In addition to Estonia, Poland is establishing a similar relationship with that country’s virulently nationalistic Rifle Associations in order to re-create something resembling territorial defense which once used to exist in a very robust form–but that was under the Socialist government of the Cold War era, back when Poland had a military worthy of the name. All in all, it looks like all the countries of Central Europe are inching toward fascism, it’s only a question of which one will be the first get a full-blown, openly fascist government.

Here on the outskirts of the village of Shishkovo under the snow and rain rusts the expensive equipment: four residential trailers for employees, diesel substation and equipment for conducting seismic surveys. Judging by the labels this equipment was certified in the U.S., and now it is in full possession of the people of Donbass.
Local residents recall that this was a temporary base of geologists from Ukrgazdobicha. The residents of the Shishkovo witnessed the beginning of the work.
– This equipment was brought at a time when in June the Ukrainian tanks came from Metallist. Started shelling the city. As we suppose, Kiev authorities planned a quick capture of South-East, Donbass in particular, for further extraction of shale gas, ” – explains a local resident Vladimir.
“They were from Western Ukraine. Geo-research. They were saying something about gas, said there is shale gas here. First there were two vehicles, then 10 -12. There was a lot.” – says a resident.
Earlier the field was divided into squares, here the expert gasman conducted seismic studies and measurements and were preparing to install a rig.
Local mechanics and welders were not hired, because many of the them spoke out against the extraction of shale gas. The residents of Shishkovo were not notified of the purpose of the camp. The camp was staffed mainly with residents of Western Ukraine, which is revealed by the documents left behind : “Ivano-Frankovsk, Cherkassy, Poltava region, Zhitomir region.” The documents also mention both gas and oil research.
According to the paperwork for 2013 found onsite, similar bases were also located in villages Shevchenko, Raigorodka and Gerasimovka.
According to the shift schedule in this trailer lived 10 employees of a Kiev company Nadrogru, and looking at this map of the camp, habging inside the trailer, we are now in a trailer number 33, and looks like some equipment and trailers were taken away from this base.
As the local residents say, the research continued until the Ukrainian national guard had left. Along with tanks and howitzers the Ukrainian soldiers also took part of the seismic equipment, but in the rush they did not have the time to gather everything.
This abandoned base can be observed well from the Ukrainian side of the frontline. Just over this field, a mile from the abandoned base is the town of Schastye, which is under the complete control of the Ukrainian army. Even now, in the midst of a ceasefire it is not safe to be here. Locals say that during evening hours the Ukrainian Armed forces and volunteer battalions begin to fire at each other.

The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko introduced a bill to the Verkhovna Rada to enlarge the maximum size of the national forces.
The draft was registered on Monday and the corresponding document was published on the website of the Ukrainian Parliament.
Russia Slams Finland for Decision to Supply Laser Rangefinders to Kiev
According to the draft, the Ukrainian military should not employ more than 250 thousand people, including 204 thousand soldiers. However, it was noted that during an emergency the military may be strengthened with conscription.
“The size of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in emergencies shall grow by the number of servicemen recruited for military service consistent with the mobilization decrees of the Ukrainian president,” it said.
The funds for an increase in the Ukrainian Armed Forces are provided for by the budget of 2015.
This comes a week after President Petro Poroshenko said that the new Minsk agreements on regulating the crisis in eastern Ukraine give hope, but he is unsure whether they will be fully implemented.
US Plans to Send 300 Military Personnel to Train Ukrainian Soldiers
“We managed to reach agreements that give hope that the events in Donbas will transition from the hot stage to a state of political regulation. I don’t want anybody to have illusions and I don’t want to seem naive – we are still far from peace…and nobody has a firm belief that the Minsk peace agreements will be strictly implemented,” Poroshenko said last week.
The Ukrainian leader expressed hope that the situation will de-escalate, and peace will be achieved through ceasefire and withdrawal of artillery.
In early January, the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Stepan Poltorak said that the state budget for 2015 will provide military funding at the amount of 44.6 billion UAH ($1.6 billion USD).
“It is almost 3.6 times more than the last year,” Poltorak said.
A similar bill was introduced the Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk on behalf of the government in January. According to him, the total financing for national security and defense in 2015 will total 90 billion UAH ($3.2 billion USD).

On the trophies kindly left by the UAF for Novorossia in theDebaltsevo cauldron
By Aleksey Smirnitskiy
Translated from Russian by J.Hawk
We are receiving the first reports concerning the approximate numbers of equipment captured in the Debaltsevo cauldron.
According to the official Kiev GenStaff announcement, as many as 15 tanks managed to leave the cauldron…out of at least 5 battalion tactical groups which were originally in the cauldron and 4 additional ones that were sent in to help.
Over 100 BMPs and BTRs have been captured in repairable condition. The junta managed to take out only about 50.
J.Hawk’s Comment: Just to reiterate, these are the weapons and equipment which are in repairable condition. Many of UAF’s losses were irretrievable—there are many photos circulating on the internet showing fields and roads littered with burned out armored vehicles left behind by the UAF.
http://www.fortruss.blogspot.com/2015/02/novorossia-acquires-treasure-trove-of.html
Judging by the “LifeNews” report on February 19, 2015 about Novorossia fighters collecting trophies after Ukrainian troops withdrew from Debaltsevo, among other finds, NAF received one whole complex of LCMR (Lightweight Counter-Mortar Radar), supplied by the United States as part of military assistance to Ukraine.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjf95WiAo3g
The U.S. has decided to send to the armed forces of Ukraine 20 LCMR radars, the first three of which were delivered in November 2014. According to the information, received by our blog from the most serious sources, soon after the transfer one of the stations was damaged during transportation, and then another station was damaged by artillery fire of the enemy at the first attempt of its combat use by the Ukrainians. We can assume that the LCMR radar, abandoned by the Ukrainian troops in Debaltsevo is the third of this ill-fated first batch of the three stations.

US-supplied armored Humvee captured by Novorossia militia

The vehicle was one of the many seized from the UAF at Debaltsevo and its vicinity. It seems to be in perfectly good working order. I suppose the most surprising thing about it is that the UAF had no time to put it up for sale, as it did the British-supplied Saxon APCs…

The Mopping Up of Debaltsevo
By Yurasumy
Translated from Russian by J.Hawk
The cauldron will cease to exist in a few hours, a day at the most. Novorossia’s army has taken most of Debaltsevo. UAF and volunteer battalions have lost their HQ, therefore are acting in an uncoordinated, chaotic fashion, in order to save themselves. Many of the soldiers who have nothing to fear (draftees and reservists) are laying down their arms. DPR/LPR is mentioning hundreds of POWs. But that is only the beginning.
Most of the prisoners will likely be captured today or tomorrow, and here’s why.
Up to yesterday UAF troops could still hope they’d be rescued. The yesterday’s assault on Debaltsevo by Republican forces [a reference to the Spanish Civil War? Because the other side is fascist, after all…] which went very well, showed that the cauldron can quickly turn into a graveyard unless they do something fast.
They can do only two things: either surrender or break out. Surrendering is not the best option for the volunteers. The draftees and reservists it means a new lease on life. It means getting out of the war which feels alien to many of them. Moreover, the experience from last summer means that captivity equals life and…freedom. Many UAF prisoners prefer not to return to Ukraine but rather to sit out the mess in Russia—that’s the reality of the civil war.
But one has to keep in mind that these brigades are not merely reservists. Many territorial battalions have been incorporated into their organization (the 128th Brigade has three of them). So far from all 128th Brigade soldiers will be wiling to surrender. Nevertheless, already last evening we were seeing reports that the soldiers of the 40th “Krivbass” Battalion were surrendering. This was reported by the battalion commander himself.
Already yesterday we say several units withdraw toward Debaltsevo, which could have meant preparations for a break-out. Indeed, it began yesterday morning. It’s hard to tell how successful it was (it’s chaos out there), but it’s clear that they suffered enormous losses in the attempt. Semenchenko writes the following on facebook:
“The situation at Debaltsevo is growing more tense. I received a report from a commander who is holding positions on the “road of life” closer to Debaltsevo. The column exiting Debaltsevo was without tank support for part of the way. Terrorist [sic] tanks came out and shot it to pieces. Our artillery and Grads are firing against enemy tanks. We are evacuating the killed and wounded. We are holding the road. The information is being verified.”
At the same time, Poroshenko announced earlier today that UAF units are leaving Debaltsevo in practically a parade formation (and with only 30 wounded). But Porky has certain credibility issues. It’s already clear that the break-out attempts led to huge personnel losses and a near total loss of heavy equipment. We’ll know how much only in several days. We’ll also find out how many UAF soldiers made the rational decision to surrender to avoid death during the break out. To be sure, DPR/LPR authorities said they are not going to announce the identities of these soldiers if they don’t wish them to be revealed, and will release the captives to their relatives.
In the meantime the situation in Debaltsevo is this: HORROR, DARKNESS, FIRE, and DEATH. One thing is for sure: the comparison between Debaltsevo and Ilovaysk is not only appropriate but obvious.
P.S. The Debaltsevo recriminations will play themselves out against the background of the first anniversary of the coup. Hang on, Porky.

Ukrainian General Staff Confirms Losing Control Over Debaltsevo Forces
Translated from Russian by J.Hawk
Earlier today the Russian Spring reported that, according to the information from the relatives of UAF troops located in the vicinity of Debaltsevo, the chain of command has completely broken down and the troops were issued orders to break out of the cauldron on their own. However, several Ukrainian media immediately denied the reports, claiming it was panic-mongering.
However, only an hour ago the acting spokesperson for the Ukrainian General Staff Vladislav Seleznev confirmed this information during a live interview on the TV channel 112, saying that DPR units were assaulting the UAF base-camp at Debaltsevo, and that the headquarters for all UAF forces there has been destroyed.
Oddly enough, Seleznev would not confirm that the Ukrainian forces are in a cauldron. But he did not deny it either.
J.Hawk’s Comment: So it’s coming to an end. It’s only a matter of how many troops make it out alive. But the loss of equipment, combined with earlier losses here and everywhere, put into question the UAF’s ability to conduct large-scale operations for a long time to come. The days of “Victory” have come to an end. The days of “Treason” are only beginning… Poroshenko and others were able to avoid reckoning for the earlier Ilovaysk debacle apparently only by promising a rematch. They seem to have lost that one too, and Round 3 does not seem in the cards. But Round 2 is the only thing that kept all the different factions of the very fragile “pro-European” junta together.
